Make Reading Memorable: One Book Theme at a Time

New Reading Traditions & National Read Across America Day March 2nd

Hi families, book lovers, and young readers! March 2nd is a very special day—it's National Read Across America Day! This fantastic day is all about celebrating the joy of reading and the magic of books. It's a day when kids and grown-ups all across the country come together to share stories, explore new worlds, and have fun with words! It's the perfect opportunity to dive into amazing books with your family and friends. We have created an awesome ritual in our home that my children get so excited for and March 2nd is the perfect time to start. When my daughter was a toddler I started creating book theme displays that I would change weekly or monthly that she would get so excited for. Now, both my son and daughter wait eagerly for our new theme.

Here's how I do it:

Step 1: Choose Exciting Book Themes: I love to explore different worlds through books but also love to hit on upcoming holidays with my kiddos. I visit our local public library and ask for books about exciting themes like "the zoo," "the farm," "Dr. Seuss," and many more! The librarians help me find the perfect books for our reading adventures. Usually during the holiday season, both the Cecil & Harford Public Library have books already out. There are also times when I get stuck and can't think of a theme, and they have book sets out already bundled at the library.

Step 2: Add Finishing Touches: But wait, there's more (but there doesn't always have to be) ! Sometimes I don't stop at just picking out books. I try to add special touches to make reading time extra fun. I decorate the top of the bookshelf with themed accessories, coloring pages, sensory toys, and more! I really try to get into the theme.

Step 3: Celebrate with Fun Treats: What's reading without a little snack, right? Last year for Read Across America, I really got into it! My children's daycare was my inspiration as well. I had colorful puff cereal, which I called "Truffula Seeds" (inspired by Dr. Seuss), and got my kids cute shirts to wear for the occasion. It was a reading celebration like no other!

Step 4: Dive into the Adventure: And now, the best part—reading time! We gather around at bedtime, cozy up with our themed books, and let our imaginations soar. The first night of a new theme you might want to plan for extra reading time. My kids always want to read all the books at the top of the self. My husband thanks me every time.

Extra Excitement: During the summer when we're off school, I try to also add some fun adventures with our themes. Last year, we had a flower theme in June. We added in a visit to a local flower garden for story time. In July, we had a zoo theme. So what did we do? We took a trip to the Plumpton Park Zoo. This is just another added touch to add excitement.

Readers, as National Read Across America Day approaches, why not start your own special reading tradition? You can visit your local library, pick out fun book themes, add special touches to your reading corner, and celebrate with delicious treats. The possibilities are endless! You don't have to go "all out" every time either. Your kids will still love it.

Remember, reading is not just about words on a page—it's about imagination, discovery, and joy. So grab a book, snuggle up with your loved ones, and let the reading adventures begin!
