Get Ready for a Cosmic Show: The Total Solar Eclipse!

April 8th: It's Time to Prepare!

By Nicole S, publisher of Macaroni KID Cecil - NE Harford, MD March 20, 2024

As a science teacher, I am thrilled to share some exciting news with you. Get ready for an out-of-this-world experience coming your way on April 8th – it's the Total Solar Eclipse! I'm bursting with excitement to share this cosmic marvel with you and your curious kiddos.

Now, picture this: the Sun, our big, bright star, is shining its heart out in the sky. But then, in swoops the Moon, our loyal companion in the night sky. It decides to give the Sun a little hug, covering it up for a bit. That's what we call a solar eclipse! But on April 8th, get ready for the ultimate eclipse show – the Moon is going to completely cover up the Sun, turning day into a magical twilight in some areas. The Total Solar Eclipse is usually a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

But here's the scoop: staring at the Sun, even during an eclipse, isn't a good idea. Just like superheroes need their special gear, we need ours too! Make sure to grab some groovy glasses called solar viewing glasses or handheld solar viewers. They'll keep our eyes safe while we marvel at this celestial wonder. Grab those glasses now because they will continue to go up in price as we get closer to April 8th.

I loved teaching my students about this in our astronomy unit this year because of the upcoming event. Some of my students have put together some awesome poster to show this cosmic dance. Mark your calendars, gather your gear, and prepare for an adventure like no other – the Total Solar Eclipse! It's going to be a journey into the stars, and I'm thrilled to share it with you and your incredible explorers.

Check out the NASA website for all the view information and the best locations for the total eclipse.

Here is information on where to purchase glasses.

See you among the stars (and the eclipse)!
